Balance of Payment Constrained Economic Growth
Original language description
The paper focuses on the balance of payments constrained economic growth model and discusses its predictions for EU countries during 1996-2005. After the short overview of economic growth that are mainly supply-side oriented it presents the importance ofdemand oriented growth models. In details the implication of balance of payments constrains are modelled and empirically tested. The statistic results have proved insignificance of price elasticities of export and import functions and thus also in the whole model. The estimates of balance of payments consistent growth were calculated and compared to the actual growth rates. The most of country's actual growth rates are below the estimated ones indicating the constrain functionality. The new EU-membershave twice higher income elasticity of export, their economic growths consistent with equilibrium of current account are more fragile and could easily fall in problem with current account deficits.
