The paper focuses on corruption in the Slovak Republic after 1989 analyzed from the perspective of the new political economy of corruption. The first section explains the model of the new political economy of corruption that adequately describes the situation related to corruption in the 1980s. It is assumed that the analyzed corruption situation influenced the behavior of bureaucratic management of the Slovak government in the first stages of transition. In the case of the Slovak Republic it is arguedthat the first stages of transition could hardly be considered uncorrupted. In Slovakia, the situation was worsened by the lack of privately owned media monitoring. Nevertheless, it does not mean that privatization is not a good mechanism for decreasinga corruption situation in society. The response of later right-wing Slovak governments to the behavior of the first left-wing Slovak governments was explained in the context of the statistics of malfeasance connected with corruption and C
