The Internationalisation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises as a Path to Competitiveness
Original language description
The chapter deals with the question: What is the driving force for SMEs to take part in the internationalization? The motives, which initiate the involvement of SMEs in the internationalization proces, are different. Based on surveys among Czech SMEs from different industries (engineering, construction industry, food and wood processing industry) were identified the motives that lead Czech SMEs to enter foreign markets. Afterwards, the chapter deals with the question: Which benefits and negative consequences for SMEs result from entering the foreign markets? Based on a conducted survey among Czech SMEs across all economic sectors not only the benefits but also the negative consequences associated with entry to foreign markets have been identified. Within the internationalization process can appear also many various barriers which SMEs must face to. So what are the barriers faced by SMEs when entering the foreign markets? In order to identify the barriers connected with entering the foreign markets, a survey among Czech SMEs across all economic sectors was carried out. These results were compared with the results of the OECD survey carried out in 2009 among SMEs from all over the world. In order to complete a comprehensive view of the internationalization process of Czech SMEs deals this chapter also with the question: What are the key success factors of SMEs when being on foreign markets? Based on the partial surveys from various sectors of economic activities (wine growing, food industry, engineering, ICT) were identified the subjective opinions of the Czech SMEs management. The chapter also discusses why SMEs, which entered the foreign market, but are no longer operating abroad, withdrew from the internationalization process. These results are confronted with a perceived (or expected) negative consequences of the internationalization process.
