Human Development Index as a key factor for international trade in the development of Sub Saharan Africa

  • Original language description

This paper examines the impacts of international trade on the economic development of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Trade balance is used as a proxy for international trade whereas the Human Development Index is used as a proxy for economic development. Analysis of trade balance as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Human Development Index (HDI) as presented in the World Bank Data Bank and the United Nations report respectively indicated that there is not enough evidence to support the argument that positive linear relationship exists between international trade and economic development. Using a low confidence level and a corresponding significance for further analysis showed a weak positive association between international trade and economic development. The regression coefficient, being closer to 0, suggests that the impacts that international trade has on economic development in Sub-Sharan Africa is insignificant.
