As a model 21-day-old pea plants (Pisum sativum L. cv. Vladan) were used. Initial changes in development of lateral buds were observed in the second bud (numbered in acropetal order), possesing the highest growth activity of all The initiation of lateralbud outgrowth was caused by shoot decapitation above the fifth bud. The cellular events were observed on paraffin sections fixed in Navashin solution and stained by basic Fuchsin and indigocarmine. The control buds from intact plants were compared withthe buds excised 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after shoot removal.
