Relation between sulphur and cadmium contents in potatoes
Original language description
A vegetative pot trial with ammonium sulphate was established to explore the joint effect of increasing supply of sulphur into the soil (natural level, 20, 40 and 60 mg S.kg-1 of soil) and a constant level of cadmium (4 mg.kg-1 in all variants) on yieldsand chemical composition of tubers and tops of potato varieties Rosara, Impala and Marabel. An increased level of sulphur in the soil showed no effect on concentration of sulphur in tubers, which ranged, in dependence on the variety and S dose, from 0.16 to 0.20 % S. The content of cadmium in tubers ranged from 0.91 to 1.28 ppm and was not too much dependent on the S supply. However, an opposite trend was observed as far as the levels of S and Cd in potato tops were concerned. The concentration of S intops was higher than that in the tubers and rose linearly with the increasing supply of S (viz. from 0.66 to 1.33 % of S). The level of Cd in tops was also considerably higher than in tubers and ranged, in dependence on individual variet
