Retention of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in young chicks.

  • Original language description

Daily changes in utilisation of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus were investigated in a balance experiment with meat type and laying type cockerels during the growing period from Day 3 to Day 22. Utilisation of Ca and Mg increased very quickly and reached its maximum at 8 and 14 days of age, respectively. The coefficients of utilisation of magnesium stabilized themselves after a sudden drop in the 15th day of life. Coefficients of phosphorus retention decreased (P<0.01) during the whole experiment. Content of calcium per 1 g of live body gain increased linearly and significantly with age. Initial increase of magnesium concentration in body gains culminated on the 13th day of life. After a decrease to the level ca 0.3 mg/g it was stabilized. The dependence of the content of phosphorus on age was expressed by the equation of the 2nd degree parabolas with maximum values at the end of the 2nd week of age. Concentration of Ca and P in live body gains was highly significantly (P<0.01) highe
