Toxicity of organic pollutant to early developmental stages of Pisum sativum L. and Zea mays L.

  • Original language description

The effect of 0.01, 0.1, 1, 4, 7 and 10 mg.l-1 of fluoranthene (FLT) on the germination, growth of seedlings and production of ethylene in Pisum sativum L. (cv. Zázrak, Garde) and Zea mays L. was investigated. The germination was significantly inhibitedonly by higher FLT concentrations, in pea cv. Zázrak by 1, 4, and 7 mg.l-1 FLT, in cv. Garde by 7 mg.l-1 FLT and in corn by 4 and 7 mg.l-1 FLT. The growth of seedlings of both plant species was affected in various extents. Significant decrease of dry weight of root and shoot was found in corn seedlings already under influence 0.1 mg.l-1 FLT, while in pea under 4 mg.l-1 FLT. Significantly shorter root and shoot of pea seedlings were found in plants treated already by 1 mg.l-1 FLT. In corn seedlings, stimulation of root elongation was found in 0.01 and 0.1 mg.l-1 FLT and inhibition of shoot by 1 mg.l-1. The presence of FLT in nutrient solution did not significantly influence the production of ethylene.
