Wheat grain quality in relation to drought and root system size
Original language description
Relationship between root system size (RSS, measured by its electrical capacitance), drought, yield and grain quality was evaluated. The RSS of 18 to 20 wheat varieties was measured in four years at two stations and compared with yield and quality from official varieties trials at 20 to 23 stations in different agroecological conditions. Average yield in extremely dry year 2007 was significantly correlated (r2 = 0.271ASTERISK OPERATOR) with the RSS as averaged over two locations and three terms and with the yield in both low- and high input variants (r2 = 0.285ASTERISK OPERATOR and 0.284ASTERISK OPERATOR, resp.). High significant correlation in 2009 was found in medium altitudes only in high-input variant (r2 = 0.391ASTERISK OPERATORASTERISK OPERATOR) and after late sowing (r2 = 0.320ASTERISK OPERATORASTERISK OPERATOR). Correlation in 2008 was not significant (r = -0.316) but in the lowest altitude with the highest temperature was significantly negative (r = -0.459ASTERISK OPERATOR). No significant correlation was found in 2010. The RSSs were not correlated with the grain starch content, but significantly with the starch yield (r2 = 0.248ASTERISK OPERATOR). Official evaluation of all 51 varieties (not all were evaluated for RSS) showed lower grain starch contents from drier stations (66.9 and 68.4%) as compared with the wetter ones (71.2 and 69.8%). Drought and small RSS had therefore similar effect, they decreased the grain starch content.
