The production capabilities of Crambe abyssinica and Malva verticillata and their effect on humus content

  • Original language description

Catch crops have multifaceted beneficial effects. The goal of the study was the assessment of the production capability of catch crops and their influence on humus content in soil. The experiment was performed at a field experimental station in Žabčice (South Moravia, Czech Republic) and was started in 2006. The experiment included two types of catch crops (Crambe abyssinica, Malva verticillata) and a control variant without catch crops planting. The catch crops were planted after winter wheat in mid-August and remained on the land until spring. After the catch crops, spring barley was grown on the land. The results suggest that the production capabilities of catch crops were affected by the weather conditions in the given year. Higher amount of biomass was consistently achieved by Crambe abyssinica, with Malva verticillata achieving a lower yield. A statistically significant difference in humus content was not found, though Crambe abyssinica did show a slight decrease. This issue, however, must be further explored in-depth.
