The Effect of Stillbirth on Gestation Length in Dairy Cows and Heifers
Original language description
This study investigates the effect of stillbirth on gestation length in dairy cattle. The Ovsynch protocol was used to synchronize the estrous cycle. Pregnancy was diagnosed by transrectal sonography. Gestation length was longer in cows that calved alive calf then dead calf (P < 0.01). Gestation length was not different in heifers that delivered alive calf compared to dead calf. Further research will be necessary to explain differences between cows and heifers in gestation length.
