Development of boar semen parameters depending on the age of sires
Original language description
The aim of this study was to evaluate influence of boar age on selected semen parameters. Experimental material was composed by 13,652 semen samples obtained during the period from January 2011 to December 2015. Semen samples were taken from 265 boars of three breeds (Czech Large White, Czech Landrace, Duroc) and two crossbreeds (Duroc x Pietrain, Czech Paternal Line x Pietrain). Boar age was between 8-48 months. The boars were divided to 4 age-based groups: 8-12 months; 13-24 months; 25-36 months and 37-48 months. Monitoring of semen parameters, especially semen volume, spermatozoa concentration, progressive motion of spermatozoa, abnormal spermatozoa, corrected and total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate was made on insemination station on daily bases. Results showed that boars between 8 months and 3 years of age had larger semen volume, percent of abnormal spermatozoa and more spermatozoa in the ejaculate. Older boars had lower concentration of spermatozoa. The largest semen volume was obtained from boars between 13-36 months. After reaching 3 years of age, the production of spermatozoa started to decrease. According to our results we can recommend that for the viable production of semen doses, the dominating group of boars should be between 13-36 months of age.
