Does the root system size and seed vigour affect the drought tolerance of wheat?
Original language description
Drought is one of the most serious abiotic stressors reducing the yield of cereal crops worldwide. Plants can defend water scarcity by "drought escape" thanks to more vigorous seed or by "dehydration avoidance" via development of larger and deeper root system in crucial vegetation stages. The root system size (RSS), seed vigour of 14 winter wheat genotypes were tested in a two-year field experiment RSS was evaluated by measuring its electrical capacitance in three vegetation stages. The seed vigour was tested in conditions of cold (10 oC) and drought stress (at -0.5 MPa). RSS was significantly affected by genotype in stem elongation phase (11.4%) and in the average of vegetation period (8.2%). The seed vigour was significantly affected by the interaction of the genotype with the year (40.4%) and genotype (37.3%). Correlation analysis of seed parameters and RSS and grain yield respectively did not show a clear relationship of the monitored traits. However, the grain yield was significantly affected by the root system size, especially in the heading phase. Hence, larger root system could be responsible for improved drought tolerance of wheat.
