The most common form of sulfur (S) occurring in water is sulfate (SO42MINUS SIGN ). SO42MINUS SIGN is widely distributed in natural environment in concentrations ranging from a few to several thousand milligrams per liter and plays an important role in biogeochemical cycles. As the SO42MINUS SIGN salts are often major contaminants in water, there is a real need to perform scientific research aiming at the investigation of sources, transport and fate of SO42MINUS SIGN to maintain the safety of the environment and human health. The aim of presented study was to assess the groundwater contamination by SO42MINUS SIGN originating from the waste management site (Lubna landfill) located in Poland. The investigation of SO42MINUS SIGN sources and changes in SO42MINUS SIGN concentrations in groundwater was performed on the basis of monitoring network of piezometers. The research provides the outcomes of a long-term groundwater quality analysis and the insights on temporal changes of this parameter. The monitoring results were compared with the Polish standards, and the quality of groundwater within the Lubna landfill and its vicinity were assessed. The application of remedial works was also discussed as a solution for the reduction of further contamination.
