Activation of socio-economic potential appears a crucial factor of regional development. Any intervention both at national or local level aimed on regional development should be consistent with an essential characteristic of regional development, i.e. sustainability. As there are many different methods for evaluating of sustainable development and this methodology has not been unified so far, it is not all clear, especially for regional authorities, what methodology to use to monitor and to analyse thelevel of sustainable development in their regions. Most of the worldwide or national sets of indicators are not very suitable at the regional level. Aside from general aspects regional application should also reflect local specificities. Corresponding indicators of sustainable development should reflect aspects of social equity, interests of local economies, environmental protection and also provide a tool for evaluation of the role of local governments and authorities or provision of lo
