In this article the definition of addiction is explored. A brief background of the historical literature in the area is included. The basic concepts of substance abuse are also discussed in the paper based on literature search of peer-reviewed articles (n=91) provided by PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, ScienceDirect etc. There is also alternative spiritual model of addiction explained on the case of two therapeutic community programs where field research was carried out from 2007 to 2010.
