Microfinances have proven to be a powerful tool for enabling access to credit to a part of society that would not get this access under normal banking institutions. The region of Central America has a quite developed sector of microfinances and out of that Nicaragua traditionally was a country with both largest amount of borrowers and resources borrowed. In recent years, Nicaragua has suffered a huge setback in its microfinance sector, caused by various reasons. Although we are fully aware of the fact that there were other factors in play, we concentrate mainly on one particular factor -- the role of the government and its support to the so called No Pago (Non-Payment) movement. We do that to show how the government's actions can influence the development of microfinances. To be able to abstract from the other factors, that generally weakened the position of MFIs in Central America (as is the world finance crisis), we try to set the situation in Nicaragua into a broader picture by comp
