Cocoa performance in the world's largest producers
Original language description
Historically, cocoa has been the mainstay of cultivating economies, especially in the western part of Africa, where the product is the primary source of exports and foreign earnings. Trade theories stress that nations should concentrate on producing and exporting commodities that they have relative factor endowments or a competitive advantage. Therefore, some cocoa cultivating countries (i.e. Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia Cameroon and Nigeria) have taken the advantage to become the largest producers and exporters of cocoa beans in the world. Thus, the relevance of the crop to these nations cannot be overemphasised. Against this backdrop, this article assesses the performance of cocoa in some major cultivating and processing countries in recent years, using descriptive approaches. Both export specialisation and competitiveness indicators suggest that although most of the economies' performances have improved, some developed more than others regarding production, value addition and export indicators. Despite the fact that the performances of those countries slightly fluctuated and moved in different directions over the years, they remain competitive almost throughout the years under study. Nonetheless, cultivating countries have lagged behind in value addition. As a result, they are not the major exporters of processed cocoa commodities and the overall cocoa products in value. The government of both cultivating and processing countries, as well as partners, should create a conducive environment and market access to stimulating cocoa producers and traders for a sustainable production, trade and earnings in countries involved.
