The environmental aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility implementation in small and medium-sized enterprises
Original language description
The aim of the paper is to examine the role and implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the Czech small and medium-sized enterprises. The focus is on the environmental aspects of CSR in relation to the forces driving change. Theoretical part begins by compiling literature dealing with the peculiarities of CSR strategies in SMEs. The theoretical framework is presented, which can be useful in analyzing CSR implementation in SMEs. The analytical part is based on CSR document analysis (identification of main motives and barriers of CSR implementation and relevant research examining the causal drivers of environmental CSR activities) and comparative analysis of research results SMEs representatives' opinions on these questions. The main sources of secondary data analysis were two questionnaire surveys conducted in 2015 (258 SMEs) and 2010 (190 SMEs) among the representatives of small and medium enterprises in the Czech Republic. Despite their limitations, results of surveys and their comparison can provide information with which to explore specifics of CSR in SMEs and be a good precursor for planning and designing further studies. For the purpose of analysis of the survey results descriptive statistics was used. The results of a comparative analysis of secondary data show that the CSR activities of surveyed SMEs are in the large extent realized in the economic area in particular through responsible market behaviour. CSR implementation in environmental area is realized particularly through the activities such as waste minimization and recycling, pollution prevention, and energy saving. According to respondents, the most significant obstacle to the participation of SMEs in CSR environmental activities is the expected high bureaucracy, which, together with the fear of rising costs and lack of time and skilled employees currently discourages greater participation of Czech SMEs.
