New political parties in the Czech Republic since 2010
Original language description
This theoretical chapter discusses the causes and conditions that led to changes in the Czech system of political parties after the parliamentary elections in 2010, 2013 and 2017. It focuses primarily on what have been called electoral earthquakes, caused by substantial shifts in voter preferences that spelt a weakening of the 'traditional' political parties that had operated in the system since the 1990s. The chapter outlines the evolution of the Czech political party system, which had long been considered stable and consolidated, and describes the changes ongoing since 2010, as well as the circumstances that produced these changes. The chapter also attempts to provide the detailed characteristics of two new types of political party: the entrepreneurial political party and the extreme-right populist party.
