The Causes of Migration in Selected Central Asian Countries
Original language description
This article analyses the structural drivers of migration in four Central Asian countries-Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan-with particular attention to regional emigration patterns in Kazakhstan between 2000 and 2020. The study combines descriptive statistics on demographic and economic conditions in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan with quantitative analysis of regional migration, wage levels and ethnic composition in Kazakhstan. Country-level indicators confirm that rapid population growth, limited job opportunities and widespread poverty are key push factors of labor emigration from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, where remittances account for a substantial share of GDP. Cluster and convergence analyses for Kazakhstan show that wage differentials contribute to regional variation in emigration but do not form a strong or consistent pattern across regions. By contrast, regions with higher shares of non-Kazakhethnic groups-especially Russians, Germans and Ukrainians-systematically record higher outflows, pointing to the importance of historicalties, policy instruments and migration networks. Overall, the findings suggest that migration in Central Asia results from the interaction of demographic pressures, economic conditions and ethnic structures rather than from a single dominant factor.
