Original language description
More extensive research in secondary forests is desirable to increase the understanding of essential ecological processes, in order to relieve the current pressure on primary forests. On the low fluvial terraces of the Caquetá River, Araracuara reg., Colombia, age-differentiated plots of second. and prim. forest have been compared with regard to the species composition and the forest structure. Plots shortly used for agriculture are readily invaded by various species of the Cecropiaceae, Guttiferae, andPalmae. Species diversity of the early seral stages is comparable to early climax clearings. Approx. 80 years after, the structure and species composition are almost identical to those of primary forest. The local traditional cultivation system is environmentally sustainable, however, the population explosion could lead eventually to the pressure on forest land. Therefore, it seems to be desirable continue in analyses of second.succession and domestication of valuable tree species of th
