Urban tree root systems and their survival near houses analyzed using ground penetrating radar and sap flow techniques
Original language description
Root systems of mature Field maple trees growing in urban environment were studied by ground penetrating radar, soil sampling and sap flow techniques. Distribution of root surfaces of coarse and fine roots and ground projected areas characterized survival conditions of trees on clay soil. High transpiration of exposed when compared to shaded trees caused higher dessication of soil around exposed trees, which lead to mechanical damage of houses, after near-by soil surface was made impermeable to precipitation.
