Variability with xylem depth in sap flow in trunks and branches of mature olive trees

  • Original language description

Knowledge of sap flow variability in tree trunks is important for further up-scaling transpiration from the measuring points to the whole tree and stand level. Natural variability of sap flow, both radial and circumferential, was studied in the trunk andbranches of mature olive trees (Olea europea L., cv Coratina) by multi-point sensors using the Heat Field Deformation method. Sapwood depth in olive ranged from 22 to 55 mm with higher variability in trunks than in branches. Two asymmetric types of sapflow radial patterns were observed: "bell-shaped" and "oak-type" (with the highest flow recorded just below cambium). Bell-shaped pattern was recorded more often in branches and smaller trees. Both types of sap flow radial patterns were observed in trunks of the sample trees. Sap flow radial patterns were rather stable during day, but varied with soil moisture changes. Decrease of sap flow in the outer xylem was correlated with water depletion in topsoil. This was also confirmed by synch

Radiální variabilita transpiračního proudu v kmenech a větvích dospělých oliv.

  • Czech description

Ve studii byla sledována radiální variabilita transpiračního proudu v kmenech a větvích dospělých oliv. Ukázaly se různé tvary křivek závisející na tloušťce kmene nebo větví a změnách vlhkosti půdy.
