Geochemical tools for the stratigraphic correlation of floodplain deposits of the Morava River in Strážnické Pomoraví, Czech Republic from the last millenium
Original language description
The flood plain of Morava River in Strážnické Pomoraví, south-east Moravia, Czech Republic is a very valuable archive of regional environmental changes during the last several millennia. Its interpretation has been limited by the reliability of stratigraphic correlation of the sediments. We show how to solve that task by using geochemical means. We studied 8 profiles of floodplain sediments from 4 localities along a 6 km long part of the current meander belt in Strážnické Pomoraví using geochemical proxy analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and 14C dating of wood remnants. The proxy methods based on elemental analyses (EDXRF) and analyses of cation exchange capacity of clay minerals (the [Cu(trien)]2+ method are suitable for the detailed description of lithological and facial variations of the sediments. The sediments older than about 3 centuries were 14C dated by wood remnants and the sediments from the last century were identified on the base of several proxies of their in
