Impact of ungulate browsing on forest dynamics
Original language description
Game may not only have an impact on species composition and population density in different forest levels, but also on forest dynamics. The recurrent browsing gradually leads to the exclusion of older woody plants after their adaptation potential is spent, or their growth reserves for the browsing damage compensation are replenished. The natural regeneration may thus be completely destroyed or kept in their initiation stage for a long time, i.e. they consist of particularly young trees complemented witholder woody plants repeatedly damaged by browsing. These possible or expected consequences of browsing are known in a general or hypothetical level, and are generally described. More detailed knowledge on mechanisms and key factors of these changes arestill far from extensive. Between 2005 and 2011, the authors of this monograph performed research of the natural regeneration conditions and the impact of browsing on natural regeneration in 33 areas.
