Redistribution of water within the aboveground part of trees
Original language description
Recent progress in sap flow technique demonstrates that, together with transpiration, hydraulic redistribution processes, HR, are determinant in tree water relations. Without HR trees would not transpire at the rates observed in many environments and locations. Results from direct sap flow measurements conducted across the world demonstrate the widespread nature of HR by roots in the soil profile. However, information about redistribution of water in tree compartments is scarce. Reverse flow is known tobe a marker of HR occurrence in roots under low evaporative demand and in dry soil conditions. However, HR may also take place under high evaporative demand in tree tissues, when the driving forces significantly differ within the tree crown. HR then canbe characterized by asynchronous patterns of flow variation in the conducting xylem of tree organs. Several examples under natural and artificial conditions demonstrate such situation by records of sap flow in different xylem layers meas
