Radiation use efficiency of adult spruce stand

  • Original language description

The assimilation activity of forest stands is strongly dependent on the accessibility of solar radiation, and its absorption plays a key role in a set of physiological processes connected to forest stand biomass production (Linder, 1985). The term radiation use efficiency (RUE) was introduced to quantify the forest stand ability to absorbe photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and to convert this energy into biomass (Monteith, 1977; Goyne et al., 1993). The real production of a forest stand on a particular locality is not determined only by the absorbed solar radiation, but also by the efficiency of this radiation energy conversion into biomass (significantly determined by the stand structure) and by the "quality" of the locality (water and nutrition availability). The real estimation of RUE is dependent on an appropriate measurement of absorbed PAR and accurate measurement of the biomass increment of the forest stand. Comparison of RUE of the adult spruce stand in the two years fo
