The role of shelterwood cutting and protection against game browsing for the regeneration of silver fir
Original language description
This paper describes forest stands on four permanent research plots (PRP) situated in the National Park of Krkonoše (Czech Republic) and Karkonoski Park Narodowy (Poland). The aim of this paper was to evaluate basic forest stand characteristics with emphasis on natural regeneration of silver (Abies alba Mill.) as result of active forest management in the past decades. The horizontal structure of the overstorey was mostly random and that of natural regeneration was aggregated. The vertical structure wasdistinctly more differentiated in forest stands with largely advanced regeneration compared to stands in the initial stage of regeneration. This mixed near-natural forests with silver fir on the studied PRP were characterized by the significantly diffe-rentiated structure that is connected with long-term anthropogenic influences. The standing volume of the main and secondary stand on the particular PRP was in the range of 237-598 m3.ha-1. It has been documented on the studied plots that
