Physiological and morphological response to light intensity in beech and silver fir was measured during three consecutive growing periods (2012, 2103 and 2014) in Sumava Mts. and in Beskydy Mts. Responses were compared between old growth and managed forests in comparable light categories.Assimilation efficiency for beech increased with light intensity, while for silver fir it decreased. The yield response in light category of forest edge (old growth reserve) was shifted towards maximal yield, while in managed forests the edge response was closer to shelter light category. Beech and fir on old growth sites are better adapted to lower light intensities than on managed sites. Responses in Sumava Mts. indicated more shade tolerance than these in Beskydy Mts.
