Challeges Facing Primary School Children with Disabilities in Uganda

  • Original language description

The study focused on an investigation into the factors contributing to the drop out of children with disabilities (CWD) in rural schools in Uganda with a case study of Ntungamo District. The purpose was to investigate into the factors responsible for the drop out of children with disabilities from the area. Questionnaires interviews were carried out by the research study. The data was analyzed, compiled and interpret. Narrative, qualitative and quantitative description of data was applied to study the responses and views from questionnaires. Findings indicated that 62 % of the respondents were in agreement that social and economic needs of children with disabilities is the major factor that contributes to the drop out of children with disabilities from rural schools. Other findings show that shortage of staff in schools contributes to drop out of children with disabilities (68 %), poor teachers attitudes towards the disabled children (52 %), poor government policies (86 %), hatred and discrimination against the disabled children (64 %), lack of morale by teacher's (66 %), lack of special equipment for teaching children with special needs was also averagely supported at 56 % of the total respondents in agreement. The study concluded that primary education in Uganda is still under funded, with infrastructure in a very poor state and with no specific structures for CWDs. We recommend that the Government of Uganda and the responsible ministry put aspects of inclusion of all children into consideration, and also provide the necessary financial support as well as intensifying long learning programs for special needs teachers with focus on primary education.
