Semi-destructive tool for assessment of wooden structures in situ

  • Original language description

The paper presents a prototype of a novel semi-destructive tool for in situ assessment of wooden structures through determination of conventional strength and modulus of deformability parallel to the grain. The device use the mini-jack inserted in 12 mm bored hole to get as close as possible compression loading mode; the measurement can be carried out in arbitrary depth of wooden beam. The instrument was tested at three moisture contents and validated with help of standard destructive testing of small samples on testing machine. The function was also examined with use of optical technique based on digital image correlation and numerical simulation. Very good correlations were found between standard strength, conventional strength, density, compression elastic moduli and modulus of deformability. The conventional strength and modulus of deformability responses very well to different moisture contents. The finite element analysis based on probabilistic approach described an influence of material properties on output force meassured by device and proved that longitudinal elastic moduli has mayor contribution in obtaining the modulus of deformability. Full-field digital image analysis of deformations around the hole showed symmetric directional distribution of displacement and strain fields in tested material and, therefore, indicate correct design of the instrument.
