Thermally modified wood: Fracture toughness in mode II examined using optical technique

  • Original language description

Thermally modified timber (TMT) has been used as an eco-friendly alternative to tropical species that has increased hygrophobicity. Nevertheless, thermal modification influences a wide range of wood properties and brings undesired side effects such as a reduction of mechanical properties. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the fracture properties of TMT hypothesized to be influenced by thermal modification. Within the study, we have examined beech wood subjected to three treatments: (i) no treatment; (ii) treated at 180 oC and (iii) treated at 200 oC. The treatment was carried out over 7 hours in a thermal chamber and after the treatment, all samples were conditioned at same conditions before measurement. A 162mm artificial crack was introduced to each sample following the requirements of the end-notched flexure test in shear - mode II. The samples were tested in a three-point bending set-up that provided a global mechanical response (load-displacement curve). Resistance curves were calculated based the load displacement curves. Physical measurement was accompanied with an optical technique based on digital image correlation (DIC) providing full-field displacements and strains. The results revealed that modification temperature substantially decreases the strength in compression parallel to the fiber and energy release rate (GII) in mode II parallel to the fiber. The higher the modification temperature, the larger decrease in fracture properties.
