Numerical simulations of coupled moisture and heat transfer in wood during kiln-drying: Nonlinearity influences on simulation results

  • Original language description

Wood drying operations are an important part of the lumber processing. The aim is to decrease drying time and save energy consequently. One of the strategies how to improve this process is drying schedules optimization [1]. Mathematical modelling can be a good tool for optimizing the drying processes. This research project was focused on development and comparison of numerical models at different levels of nonlinearity and coupling. Numerical simulations of the coupled thermal and moisture fields in wood during kiln-drying were observed with the focus on non-isothermal moisture transport in the three-dimensional orthotropic wooden body with initial moisture content below the fiber saturation point. Four different unsteady-state numerical models of the kiln-drying process were compared with the assumptions given by commonly used standards [2] for wood kiln-drying processes. The first model describes linear simulation, the other three models present nonlinear simulation using variable material coefficients dependent on temperature and moisture content, differing in settings of the Soret effect (thermodiffusion) coefficient.
