Original language description
This research developed plywood by combining birch with alternative wood species and evaluated the influence of different lay-up schemes on its properties. Five-layer plywood was formed with 19 different lay-up schemes using birch, black alder and aspen veneers. The different lay-up schemes identified opportunities to improve the properties of the plywood by replacing high-grade birch veneer with alternative low-grade alder and aspen veneers of different thicknesses. For comparison, single-species plywood was also manufactured using phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. The thickness, density, compression ratio and bonding strength of the plywood were determined. The plywood manufactured from a mixture of birch and alder or aspen veneers offered higher bonding quality compared to panels manufactured from alder or aspen veneers alone. The bonding strengths of all panels met the European standard EN 314-2 for Class 1 plywood. The mixed-species plywood consisting of birch and black alder exhibited an average bonding strength of 3.11 MPa, while the combination of birch and aspen resulted in a bonding strength of 2.6 MPa, and the combination of birch, black alder, and aspen veneers showed a bonding strength of 2.5 MPa. Overall, alder and aspen veneers could be successfully utilised with proper lay-up schemes in the veneer-based products industry.
