Vertical distribution of foliage in Moravian floodplain forests
Original language description
Distributions of leaf dry mass (Md) and leaf area (Af) in vertical direction were related to relative irradiance Ir (Ir above the stand = 100%) in mature, closed-canopy old growth stands of the floodplain forest in southern Moravia composed largely of Quercus, Fraxinus and Tilia species. Actual values of foliage area or mass at any given height were converted into solar equivalent leaf area (As) by multiplying actual values at a given level in the canopy times the relative irradiance at that position. Stand LAI was 5 (7 when including shrub and herb layer), and solar equivalent parameters reached about 1/4 of that amount. In all species, vertical profiles of both relative irradiance and leaf dry mass to area ratio (@d) was sigmoidal; both variables were closely linearly related. The dominant, upper canopy species had a larger proportion of solar equivalent foliage than suppressed low canopy species. The same was true for individual trees of all species.
