Element fluxes in floodplain forest ecosystems affected by the long-term influence of air pollution
Original language description
The floodplain forest ecosystems in the region are part of the Weiße Elster-Pleiße-Luppe river system which flows into the Saale-Elbe river system. Long-term air pollution resulting from power station and industrial activities belongs to the most important negative anthropogenic effects. Atmospheric precipitation exhibits variable values in the course of the year ranging from 4.0 to 6.0 pH. Seepage water at a depth of 15 cm is of slightly acid character copying throughfall values. At a depth of 30 cm, soil solution acidity amounts to pH 4.5-6.0. With the increasing depth, soil solution acidity decreases and groundwater pH values show nearly neutral values. Mean concentrations of all elements determined in precipitation water increased due to throughfall. The highest increase was found in potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen. Sulphur (S-SO4 ) and nitrogen depositions into the soil amount to 36-39 and 22-28 kg ha-1 year-1, respectively.
