Safflower breeding, evaluation and genepool maintenance in the Czech Republic
Original language description
In the 1994-2006, nearly 140 samples of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) were collected and evaluated at Horticultural Faculty of Mendel University. Forty-eight ornamental varieties, twenty oilseed cultivars and 72 landraces were evaluated in 30 morphological characters. A significant correlations were recorded among plant height and the high-rated characters as are combinations of large heads with the spineless bracts and vermillion-red flowers. Contrary to discovery of significant correlations between a yellow flowers and high OIB spininess, nearly spineless yellow-flowered genotype was recognised as well, and this one has been used (together with a medium-early strains with a deep vermillion flowers) as a initial material to selection of new ornamental varieties.
