    Main Squares of Small Towns

  • Original language description

Small towns and their squares are bearers of our cultural identity and the place of everyday and the most concentrated coexistence of citizens. The main square has crucial importance for the observer's mind in the perception of the urban environment. Its visual assessment is a typical process shaping the overall impression of a town. If we want to study, modify, or change the main squares of small towns it is necessary to investigate the circumstances of their origination, form and functional arrangement. Considerations of the entire context, not only from the urban planning or artistic perspectives, but also social and psychological, are a necessary step to their comparison, evaluation of the current status and an important tool for their future development and protection. The effort to design these most important public spaces, even in small towns, means a targeted aiming for the general prosperity. This category of towns is explored, not only in the Czech Republic, but also in the wider European area; therefore, the book follows the current European trends and development projects. The author divided squares by their origin, formation, position, shape, size related to the town, building and architecture features, and the links to streets and accompanying road network. Additionally, the image of squares and their visual impacts are described. The text also contains graphical overviews and photographs showing a representative sample of small towns in the Czech Republic. Due to the announced European and national strategies of territorial development based on the development of regions and harmonizing of their conditions, less known examples with various regional affiliations are introduced. The conclusion of the books includes general recommendations, each designer/planner should take into account when designing the main square.
