Influence of CMS on seeds production of Petunia hybrida
Original language description
Petunia hybrida is among the most popular annual plants worldwide. Majority of current varieties are hybrid. Production of F1 seeds is labor- and cost- demanding because it requires manual emasculation and pollination of maternal plants with pollen from paternal plant. Therefore, seed companies relocate the production to countries with lower labor costs. It brings disadvantages like risk of stealing intellectual property or the inability to continuously monitor the production process. Solution to this problem is Cytoplasmic Male Sterility (CMS) that ensures that flowers of maternal component don't contain functional pollen, thus don't require emasculation. The most effective transfer CMS is via asymmetrical protoplast fusion. The aim of the experiment was to determine how CMS influences the yield and production costs of F1 seeds. This was examined for 14 varieties. Higher yield was reached if sterile component was used. The seeds production labor costs reduced by 48 %.
