Influence of temperature and composition on the melting of mullite-based glass-ceramic glazes
Original language description
Glass-ceramic glazes offer superior mechanical and electrical properties compared to conventional glazes; however, they have not yet been applied to the surface treatment of high-voltage insulators. The production of glass-ceramic glazes involves melting a precursor mixture, followed by rapid cooling to form frits, which serve as the base material for subsequent glaze formulations. Given the high melting point of mullite (1840 oC), the composition of the precursor must be modified to lower the melting temperature to a more practical range. For this purpose, melting aids such as H3BO3 were incorporated into stoichiometric mullite formulations. The resulting melting behavior was evaluated using an observational furnace. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of temperature and chemical composition on the melting characteristics of mullite-based glass-ceramic glazes, with a view to developing materials suitable for application on high-voltage insulators.
