Strategy of birch (Betula L.) survival in substitute stands of the Krušné hory Mts. Air - polluted region
Original language description
In the plateau of the Krušné hory Mts, massive premature yellowing of leaves and dieback occurred in substitute stands in spring 1998. The cause of the events was repeated frost damage to the cambial zone of the basal part of stems. While B. pubescens agg. showed a trend to shrubby growth and thus elimination of damaged tissues and survival, B. pendula Roth maintained arborescent growth supported by sclerified bark with gives an advantage to the pioneer species on othes sites. European birch of unsuitable provenance shows a decreased chance for survival under conditions of higher altituds of the mountains.
