Variations in conducting patterns of trees growing in three Mediterranean countries and relations to crown development
Original language description
Conducting systems of main stems was characterized by a radial pattern of flow during long-term sap flow studies in the Mediterraen regions a background for integration of flow rate within stems of trees.Typical highly asymmetric pattern was observed inoak species. The xylem was conductive down to the pith in young trees, but occupy only a narrow zone in old trees. Sapwood was deeper in diffuse-porous species, which had narrower vessels then oaks. Proper estimation of radial pattern is the most important pre-condition for up-scaling data from series of sample trees to forest stands.
