Effect of stress on growth of birch (Betula pendula Roth).

  • Original language description

The phenology of flushing and leaf formation shows that these processes are retarded in conditions of acid and nitrogen inputs. Alternate annual shoots did not begin to grow out in frost-damaged birch trees until the stage of full foliage of undamaged trees. Trees stressed by excessive nitrogen and acid began to shed leaves later. Excessive nitrogen levels caused frost damage of birch. The height increment was differentiated and was based on the type of stress. In the first year the acid inputs did not have a negative effect, in contrast to drought stress. The response of the diameter increment of the root collar corresponded to the height, but differentiation among the various stress variants was stronger. In the second year the above regularities fromthe first vegetation period were confirmed.
