Responses of sap flow in spruce stems and roots to loading by heavy forest machinery
Original language description
Heavy machinery (forest tractors) moving along skidding trails in the forest may damage root systems of shallow-rooting trees. To verify this situation, a large series of sap flow sensors installed on spruce root sand stems were installed and sap sap flow was recorded during machinery movement. Results indicated, that root sap flow decreased by about 40% after passing a peak of increased flow during pounding. This occurred in roots down to the depth of 10-12cm, while no response was apparent in deeper roots. Application of this knowledge leads to improvement of skidding technology and better protecting of trees.
