Borreliosis, or Lyme disease, is caused by spirochetes that belong to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.). Canine borreliosisis often diagnosed in North America dogs from endemic regions but rarely in European dogs, although they may by infested with Ixodes ricinus, the main vector of these spirochetes. From the epidemiological point of view, dogs are very important since they are considered a suitable indicator of the spread of human borreliosis. Serum samples obtained from healthy , asymptomatic service dogs in the Czech republic were assayed for IgG antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi. The total of 399 serum samples was tested by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and positive results were confirmed by immunoblot assay. Positive and negative samples were compared. Specific antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. were detected in 26 cases (6,5%). Two antigens Borrelia burgdorferi s.l.
