Respiratory infections are often the cause of economic losses in large-scale calf-houses. We investigated 35 post-weaning calves (Czech red-spotted bred) from a large-scale calf-house with 250 animals. The calves suffered from respiratory problems and occasional diarrhoea. Immediately after transfer, samples were collected for mycoplasmological examination. These examinations were repeated on six occasions during five-month investigation. The samples were examined by culture and identification of isolates was carried out on the basis of their biochemical activity in liquid mycoplasma media, sensitivity to digitonin and with the use of epi-immunofluorescence. The ELISA for detection of Mycoplasma bovis antigen and the nested-PCR for Mycoplasma bovis detection were used. On the first examination, mycoplasma strains were isolated from only 21 calves out of 35. However, the following examination at 30 days revealed infection in all animals.
