Diversity of myxozoan parasites (Myxosporea, Ceratomyxidae) in frogs in Kakamega forest, Kenya

  • Original language description

Myxozoan parasites represent a diverse group of endoparasites of aquatic vertebrates. Although parasitize predominantly fish, a number of species of genera Chloromyxum, Leptotheca, Myxidium, Myxobolus and Sphaerospora affect amphibian hosts. During the research on parasites of East African poikilotherm vertebrates in 2003, frogs from a little, permanent forest pool near Udo's camp site, Kakamega forest national reserve, Kenya, were examined for the presence of parasites. Examinations revealed three different myxozoan species. Infection with Myxidium sp. 1 was recorded in the gall bladder of 2 of 4 B. "regularis". Spores were Myxidium-shaped, without any visible longitudinal ridge. 11 of 18 H. kivuensis were infected by another Myxidium (sp. 2). Sporeswere typically Myxidium-shaped, with prominent longitudinal striations. 3 of 12 H. kivuensis possessed infection with Sphaerospora sp. in renal tubules; two of these H. kivuensis were simultaneously infected with Myxidium sp. 2.
