Acid-base Balance of Follicular Fluid in Dairy Heifers
Original language description
We compared the acid-base balance in the follicular fluid (FF) and in peripheral venous blood (VB) of dairy heifers. Four animals were superstimulated with FSH for 4 days (D0-D3, decreasing doses at 14 h intervals , total 440 I.U.). Follicular fluid samples were collected by ultrasound-guided transvaginal follicular aspiration (TVFA) in different phases of follicular development. The dominant follicles on ovaries were aspirated 2 days before superstimulation (D-2). The two largest follicles were aspirated during and after superstimulation on Days 2, 4, 6 and 8 and simultaneous blood samples were collected from vena jugularis. The values of pH, standard bicarbonate ( HCO3), base exess (BE), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2 ) and O2 (pO2 ) were compared. Significant differences (FF vs VB, paired t-test) were found in pH (7,507 vs 7,423), pCO2 (4,35 vs 6,62) and pO2 (24,31 vs 4,64). Although differences in HCO3 and BE were not statistically significant, higher values were found in FF (29,68
