Polysaccharide storage myopathy - histopathological findings in horses with exertional rhabdomyolysis compared to healthy horses
Original language description
To assess muscular histopathological changes in horses with and without clinical history of exertional rhabdomyolysis with special reference to polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM). Muscle samples were collected from ten horses with a history of repeated episodes of exertional rhabdomyolysis and from 29 horses without clinical signs of muscular disorders. Precooled frozen muscle samples were stained with haematoxylin and eosin as well as periodic acid-Schiff with and without amylase digestion and histopathologic changes (amylase-resistant glycogen, subsarcolemmal glycogen, intracytoplasmic masses, subsarcolemmal vacuoles, fibre size variation, and internal nuclei) were evaluated. Fisher`s Exact test was used to test for differences and a value of P <= 0.05 was considered significant. There was a significant difference between horses with and without clinical history of exertional rhabdomyolysis regarding the presence of subsarcolemmal amylase sensitive glycogen deposits (n=9 (90%) an
